I contemplated whether or not to share the latest thing to happen along my soul journey due to its potentially controversial subject matter, but then I realized that I cannot share just the warm and fuzzy feel good stuff. That wouldn’t be a realistic illustration of my journey, right? So here it is.
My 22-year-old step-son, Andy, came to visit Tuesday night to share with Steve and me a revelation he claimed had changed his life. Not knowing anything more than that, we were extremely curious to hear what he had to share -- but I had no idea that it was going to impact my life as well. Andy is a handsome, muscular, gregarious, funny, deep-thinking young man who has gone through the common struggles of teenage years and come out on the other side with more self-confidence and conviction about life than I ever had. Andy is a large presence in the room both physically and energetically. He is excellent at setting boundaries with friends, family and acquaintances and one always knows where you stand as he is not afraid to tell you what he is thinking. As a person who constantly managed the feelings in the room and used as much diplomacy as possible to say what I needed to say, avoiding conflict like the plague and sacrificing my own needs for other’s comfort, I look at Andy with awe and I adore him. The fact that he called us to make an appointment to sit down with us to share this revelation impressed us. Steve and I were anxious to experience what Andy had to share.
Andy’s revelation was about his decision to become Vegan. Now this is a curious alteration to Andy’s diet as during Andy’s body building training years he ate more animal protein daily than I could consume in a week. He kept track of his protein intake diligently. A change like this seemed drastic and surprising…at first. Andy asked us to commit to giving him one hour of focused attention and to promise to open our minds to what we were going to hear and see. He then put on a one-hour video for us to watch.
The amateur video was taken during a talk given at Georgia Tech in 2010 by a man named Gary Yourofsky and was entitled “Best Speech you will ever Hear”. Let me just say, that not only was Gary’s talk compelling and disturbing but the corresponding footage he showed was horrific, shocking and shook me to my core. By the end I was weeping and heart broken and full of shame for what I saw and for how I remained ignorant to this subject matter (consciously). I am not going to say anything more than that except that I could hardly sleep that night and the images I saw and the information I now have in my head will be with me forever…but it should be.
Steve and I talked long and hard about this experience and this new knowledge and have decided to follow Andy’s lead into a Vegan lifestyle. I cleaned out my refrigerator and pantry and we will be making a very large food donation tomorrow. We realized that this was our next step in our conscious development. Evolving our souls and our conscious with regards to relationships cannot be done without taking into consideration our relationships with animals and the earth. It will be a challenging change to instill in our lifestyle as we both have been lovers of meat, cheese, dairy and eggs. But the love of the taste is not the point.
This is now our revelation and I am grateful to Andy for shaking up our world to expose these truths to us. I had to make a choice on how I proceeded with this knowledge. With knowledge comes responsibility. And for us, this is our choice.
If you are interested to see this video, I will share the link and I encourage you to continue your own research. But please be warned that this video contains extremely disturbing concepts, images and videos that will never leave you and may change your life forever, like it did for us.
